Welcome to the Historic Horse Prairie Stage Stop

Proudly veteran-owned, we are a historic, rustic Montana hunting lodge in the heart of our Southwest featuring old-time hospitality and locally dry-aged steaks raved about throughout the state.

The Best Dry-Aged Steaks in Southwest MT

Locally Dry-Aged Steaks

Stop by our restaurant for one of the best steaks in Montana! Dry-aged to perfection, we've been perfecting our craft on the Horse Prairie since the 1800s.

Then in the Arctic half-light of the canyon, all existence fades to a being with my soul and memories and the sounds of the Big Blackfoot River and a four-count rhythm and the hope that a fish will rise. Eventually, all things merge into one, and a river runs through it.

- Robert Redford

Though rest and relaxation are our main draws (And our dry-aged steaks!), the local area is bursting with activities that all types will enjoy.

Take a hike to a mountaintop lake, visit a ghost town, ride horses, or get out here for hunting season, you won't find a better spot!

Rooms & Rates

As the last stop and termination point on the line prior to folks heading over the Lemhi pass, our Stage Stop has a rich history. Logbooks dating back to the 1850s give insight into the lodge's years of guests and hospitality. Our rooms reflect these simpler times, with some of the original decor still intact!

A Rustic Hunting Lodge in Southwest Montana
Horseback Riding at the Horse Pairie Stage Stop in Southwest, MT

Southwest Montana wasn't, nor is, for the faint of heart. Open prairies surrounded by high mountains make for some incredible views of the Big Sky, and some harsh weather and winters. However, don't let this deter, the Stage Stop is where patrons stop for a cozy night's rest when they want to get away from the bustle of Bozeman, or get out for hunting season.

August 2022 - Second time we have ate here. The best steak I've eaten. Cooked and seasoned perfectly. Great service. We will be back next time we travel through. Love this place.
